We have no idea how Tolstoy did it, but to keep track of your characters, we recommend Bee Docs Timeline. Whether real or fictional, you can chart different characters on parallel timeline rows to see the connections and interactions between different plot events over time.
Customers have also used Bee Docs Timeline to chart line numbers in a play. Timelines are a perfect tool for planning or analyzing written works.
Sci-Fi Calendars
Several authors have asked us about creating timelines based on fictional calendar systems like Tolkien did in Lord of the Rings.
While Mac OS X and Bee Docs Timeline can support several calendar systems—Gregorian, Buddhist, Hebrew, Islamic, and Japanese—they do not directly support fictional calendars. However, here is a tip:
Create timelines based on Gregorian dates and then set the date format to “None.” Write your own date label in the Notes field. Now you are unbounded by existing calendar systems!
